AAFP Congress of Delegates Elects New Leaders, Considers Washington Resolutions
NASHVILLE — Two WAFP resolutions were reaffirmed as current policy and one was referred to the AAFP Board of Directors for further study at the 2026 Congress of Delegates, held Oct. 19-21 in Nashville.
Resolution 210: Supporting Post-Graduate Primary Care Psychiatry Fellowships — Referred to the Board
This resolution asked AAFP to separately list primary care psychiatry fellowships on its online fellowship listing as well as support those institutions wishing to establish a primary care psychiatry fellowship. The Reference Committee on Organization, Finance, and Education felt there was sufficient complexity in the asks of the resolution to warrant further deliberation by the AAFP Board. WAFP, working alongside the Utah chapter, will monitor AAFP’s progress on this resolution. Both entities may consider bringing back a follow-up resolution to the 2027 Congress of Delegates.
Opposing Mass Arrests, Detainments, and Family Separations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — Reaffirmed as Current Policy
This resolution asked AAFP to issue a statement in clear opposition to the ongoing raids and detentions by ICE because of the traumatic impact and health risks the raids cause. The COD Rules Committee ruled that current AAFP policy already covers this issue.
Statement on the Safety of Acetaminophen in Pregnancy — Reaffirmed as Current Policy
This resolution called for a narrow statement supporting the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy by AAFP. In the background information accompanying this resolution, AAFP staff identified similar statements that had already been issued around this topic. Further, they noted there was some risk in issuing a new statement: the news cycle has moved on, and resurfacing the issue could lead to additional patient confusion. As with the previous resolution, the Rules Committee felt that current AAFP policies already make clear that the Academy supports evidence-based medical guidance, patient counseling during pregnancy, and clear communication about the appropriateness of acetaminophen during pregnancy.
The Congress also celebrated new AAFP leadership: Dr. Russell Kohl (Oklahoma) won the election for president-elect. Dr. Kisha Davis (Maryland) assumed the presidency of AAFP, and Dr. Sarah Nosal (New York) is now the Board of Directors’ chair.
Three directors were elected to three-year terms: Drs. Domenic Casablanca (Connecticut), Renee Crichlow (Massachusetts), and Dr. Jason Marker (Indiana). Dr. Daron Gersch (Minnesota) was elected as speaker, and Dr. Beverly Jordan (Alabama) was elected vice speaker. The Congress also confirmed the election of new Board members Dr. Robert Assibey (new physician; California), Dr. Alexandra Greenberg (resident; New York), and Lauren Hutchinson (student; Idaho) as presented by their respective constituencies.
