AAFP Congress of Delegates Debates WAFP Resolutions, Elects New Leadership

ANAHEIM, CA — The 2025 AAFP Congress of Delegates (COD) revised two WAFP resolutions and reaffirmed two others during its annual meeting. The Congress considered numerous other resolutions from across the country and elected new leadership as part of its work.

The WAFP resolutions adopted by the Congress concerned medication abortion and obesity coding. Both featured collaboration with other state chapters and interested parties to produce resolutions that accomplished the aims of the original authors while also mitigating concerns raised by others.

The resolution on medication abortion committed AAFP to collate and maintain abortion care management resources and to encourage all family medicine resident programs receive accurate education on medications for miscarriage management and abortion. The obesity coding resolution directs AAFP to advocate for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to choose ICD obesity codes for inclusion in the Hierarchical Condition Category Risk Adjustment Model which do not include stigmatizing language.

A resolution on health care data security and artificial intelligence, as well as one on weight-inclusive care, were reaffirmed as current AAFP policy.

The full list of resolution actions will be available on the AAFP’s 2025 Congress of Delegates website.

The COD also elected new leadership: Dr. Kisha Davis of Maryland was elected as president-elect, while Dr. Tracy Hendershot of West Virginia, Robyn Liu of Oregon, and Douglas Spotts of Pennsylvania were elected to the AAFP Board of Directors.

Sarah Nosal, MD, FAAFP, of New York, assumed the AAFP presidency, while Jen Brull, MD, FAAFP, of Colorado, became the Academy’s Board chair. Russell Kohl, MD, FAAFP, of the Oklahoma chapter was re-elected as speaker, and Daron Gersch, MD, FAAFP, of Minnesota, was re-elected as vice speaker.
