RESIDENT ACTIVITY AND EVENT DESCRIPTIONS

Resident Trustee, Alternate Resident Trustee, and Foundation Resident Trustee
One Resident Trustee and one Alternate Resident Trustee represent resident interests on the WAFP Board of Directors. An additional Resident Trustee represents resident interests to the WAFP Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the academy. Trustees attend the Board Meetings, and serve on committees to which they may be appointed. The Resident Trustee is a voting member of the board. To get involved, a resident must be elected by the Resident Chapter and approved by the House of Delegates. WAFP Resident Board member is elected for a one-year term. Starting as the Alternate Trustee facilitates the process of becoming the Resident Trustee in the successive year (if a resident is so inclined). The WAFP Foundation Trustee is elected for a two-year term, and is elected during even-numbered years. Click here for more information about leadership positions and application process.

Your current trustees can be viewed here: WAFP Leadership Roster

Student and Resident Retreat
Held in January or February, the purpose of the Student & Resident Retreat is to provide an environment for students and residents to interact, to learn about advocacy and opportunities for involvement, and to discuss Family Medicine. A variety of speakers are brought in throughout the weekend to educate, encourage and inspire students and residents. There is also plenty of opportunity for fellowship and relaxation.

WAFP House of Delegates Meeting – Resident Delegates & Alternate Delegates
The House of Delegates is a one-day meeting where delegates from local chapters gather and set Academy policy for the coming year. The WAFP Resident Chapter has been apportioned six to eight delegates who have full voting privileges, and an equal number of alternate delegates.  Residents may also submit resolutions for consideration by the House. WAFP reimburses delegates and alternate delegates for one night’s lodging at the conference hotel.  Click here for application.

WAFP Annual Scientific Assembly – Student/Resident Track
Attend two days of workshops and lectures on subjects ranging from clinical workshops to practice management modeling, to learning about policy and advocacy. The two-day scientific assembly in May immediately follows the WAFP House of Delegates meeting, which is where Academy policy is set. Residents who choose to participate in the Scientific Assembly receive a discount on the registration fee and have the opportunity for a scholarship stipend to assist with travel expenses. Click here for application.

National Conference of Family Medicine Residents & Students (NCFMRS)
Held every summer in Kansas City, Missouri, this conference is organized specifically for residents and students. This is a phenomenal opportunity for learning about Family Medicine and leadership development. The Resident Congress includes a Delegate and Alternate Delegate from each state. These delegates attend all business sessions, poll their state delegations about issues before the congresses and vote in the elections. Residents also have the opportunity to network with hundreds of residency programs, recruitment firms, health agencies, and hospitals; dialogue with peers; participate in a variety of procedural courses to improve clinical skills; and write resolutions and testify on issues important to residents. Click here for application.

Family Medicine Resident Career Fair & Practice Management Seminar
Hosted by the King County Chapter of the WAFP, the Family Medicine Resident Career Fair & Practice Management event allows resident physicians to become acquainted with practice position opportunities and choices available in the family medicine specialty in Washington State, and encourages communication among potential associates as early as practical during a residency. The Practice Management Seminar is open to family medicine resident physicians and their partners. At this seminar the residents will learn how to:

  1. Learn how to Evaluate the way a practice is run, the financial health of a practice, malpractice insurance (ins and outs), and contracts
  2. Find ways to market yourself
  3. Make a decision on the kind of practice YOU want to join
  4. Learn about Federal and State Loan Repayment Programs
  5. Meet great practice opportunities throughout Washington State

The 2011 Family Medicine Resident Career Fair & Practice Management Seminar will be held in October 1 & 2 at the Marriott Residency Inn in Bellevue.  You can download the official registration form and additional information below.
